Designers can quickly display a concept involving color combinations and furnishings to potential clients that resembles their own home or workspace. Graduates from an interior design course will have a thorough understanding of space planning, color, natural and artificial light and textures. They must have a vision for each project whether it involves a relatively simple rearrangement of furnishings and art work, or it requires alteration of walls and flooring with respect to load bearing and other basic structural issues. Ideally, an interior design course will give the graduate a solid background in drawing, drafting, color, design, space planning and perspective. A student of design may wish to also study the specific area of feng shui, which is the practice of arranging objects, including furniture, to achieve harmony with one’s environment. Interior design is critical for work places as well as homes, because a space that’s designed properly and inventively can have a very positive effect on human interaction and emotional response, improving the quality of our lives. When choosing an interior design course, there are online options as well as many institutions offering diplomas onsite. Students wishing to study in New York would be well advised to consider the New York School of Interior Design. It’s New York’s only private, not-for-profit college dedicated to interior design education. Its curriculum gives emphasis to both residential and contract design. While it’s the largest interior design program in New York with over 700 students, it retains a small-college atmosphere, boasting a student-faculty ratio of about 10-1. The school’s combination of day, evening, Saturday and Sunday classes makes it possible to work full-time and still pursue a degree. Another New York institution to consider when looking for a similar program is the Sheffield School. The interior design course there is the school’s oldest and most popular. Sheffield boasts over twenty years of preparing people for successful careers in interior design and decoration. Graduates of Sheffield have goals ranging from working part-time as freelance decorators to full-time employment as interior designers. Students hoping to study on the west coast should review the curriculum at the California College of The Arts. Interior design students there will enhance their education with supportive related courses in architecture, fashion design, furniture, graphic design, industrial design and visual studies. The CCA’s two campuses are located at San Francisco and Oakland and offer a wide range of social activities as well. A career supported by an interior design course can be very gratifying. Many people have found satisfaction from work that has a positive effect. In this creative field, a job well done can certainly improve the quality of life for a family or possibly even a whole community. |
