Bachelor of Arts in Art
The Bachelor of Arts degree program at Marylhurst University is ideal for students seeking a general knowledge of art for the purpose of working in art-related fields, art administration, art education or preparing to enter the Marylhurst MA in Art Therapy Counseling program. For the BA degree, 78 credits in art are required, including fundamental courses in design, drawing, art history and photography.
Our objective is to help you understand art as a profession. You will visit exhibitions, discuss current literature and tour galleries and museums. You will learn how business is done as you become acquainted with the issues and personalities in the art community.
Our faculty are active in the art community – exhibiting their work, installing commissioned pieces, serving on committees, working with professional organizations. You will learn from their experiences and, through an internship, receive hands-on experience with gallery management, arts organizations or the art studio business.
Master of Arts
The Marylhurst University MA in Art Therapy Counseling program, established in 1986, is the only program of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. In 1991, 1996 and again in 2002, it was reviewed and approved by the American Art Therapy Association.
The MA in Art Therapy Counseling program integrates students’ knowledge of visual arts and art processes with the study of psychotherapy and counseling.
Art experiences are integrated with most of the core classes. Students use creative work to understand theories of art therapy, clients and therapeutic relationships.
In this program, students:
- Develop professional skills to prepare for clinical work
- Earn a master's degree in as little as two years on a full- or part-time basis
- Gain extensive experience in therapeutic settings through the art therapy practicum
Graduates of Marylhurst’s AATA-approved master's program may apply for the professional credential of registered art therapist (ATR) following completion of 1,000 hours of supervised post-master's art therapy experience. (Degree programs without AATA approval require additional hours.)
The MA in Art Therapy Counseling Program meets the educational requirements of Oregon's state licensing board for professional counselors and therapists, the National Board for Certified Counselors and the American Art Therapy Association's credentialing board. Check with your own state regarding its licensing requirements for professional counselors.
Bachelor of Fine Arts
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree program at Marylhurst University is intended for the person who wants professional training in the fine arts.
Of the 180 quarter credits required, 120 are in art. The curriculum is built on foundation coursework in design, drawing, art history and photography. Advanced coursework includes art theory and criticism as well as studio work in your area of interest:
Painting
Photography
Sculpture
You will examine issues, ethics, ideas and basic business practices that influence the working artist. The art thesis project in your final year leads you through the process of producing a cohesive body of finished artwork, which is shown in the Spring thesis exhibition in Marylhurst’s acclaimed art exhibition gallery, The Art Gym.
Bachelor of Fine Arts
The only accredited interior design program offered in the Portland metropolitan area, Marylhurst University's BFA in Interior Design is a comprehensive four-year degree. Students with sophomore standing may finish the program in three years by completing a 15-credit summer intensive session.
The curriculum integrates architecture and art into the study of interior design. This interdisciplinary approach provides students with the practical knowledge, critical thinking and creative skills needed to succeed.
The BFA in Interior Design program at Marylhurst University prepares students to become practicing designers and to sit for national-level examinations for professional certification. The Marylhurst program focuses primarily on commercial interior design – corporate, medical, educational, institutional, restaurant, hospitality and retail spaces. These skills provide graduates with a greater variety of career options.
In addition, a Marylhurst education enriches students' lives with its strong foundation in the liberal arts. Graduates leave Marylhurst with a greater appreciation of the diversity of individuals and ideas, lifelong learning and the practice of environmental stewardship.
